A structural evaluation of an 84-inch RCP tunnel located beneath the CSX rail lines in Nashville, TN, discovered that mud and silt had filled more than half of the tunnel.
Groundwater had entered the tunnel through a large opening in a brick vault, compromising the structural integrity of both the tunnel and its pipes — a 36-inch water main and 6-inch water line.
Project Overview
A structural evaluation of an 84-inch RCP tunnel located beneath the CSX rail lines in Nashville, TN, discovered that mud and silt had filled more than half of the tunnel. Groundwater had entered the tunnel through a large opening in a brick vault, compromising the structural integrity of both the tunnel and its pipes — a 36-inch water main and 6-inch water line.
STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES developed a comprehensive design plan to upgrade the affected tunnel, pipes, and vault. Given that water services needed to be suspended for most of the project, the repair work was on a tight schedule.
STRUCTURAL, an exclusive licensee of STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES, performed the repairs. The initial phase involved debris removal from the tunnel and pipes, followed by the application of STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES’ StrongPIPE® V-Wrap™ Carbon Fiber System to reinforce the pipes and mitigate future damage from potential groundwater infiltration. The second phase focused on repairing the brick vaults, which were also reinforced with the V-Wrap™ system.
Despite the time constraints, the upgrade was completed efficiently, ensuring long-term safety and functionality of the tunnel and its infrastructure.
