A steel riveted penstock located in Banff National Park was rehabilitated using STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES’ StrongPIPE® V-Wrap™ Structural Carbon Fiber System for an innovative, high-quality solution.
Project Overview
Banff National Park, known for its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, is home to TransAlta’s Cascade Hydroelectric Power Plant. The plant’s 96-inch steel riveted penstock, built in 1941, showed signs of corrosion over time, threatening its integrity and service life.
After evaluating several rehabilitation options, STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES’ StrongPIPE® V-Wrap™ System was chosen to restore 460 lineal feet of pipeline. PULLMAN, an exclusive licensee of STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES, installed this trenchless solution, overcoming the challenges of a 30-degree slope with robotic blasting for surface prep and a custom stair and cart system for safe, efficient repairs.
Located in a National Park near vital infrastructure, the team prioritized environmental protection and the safety of surrounding structures. The penstock rehabilitation was successfully completed in approximately 9,000 man-hours with zero safety incidents, highlighting the team’s expertise and dedication to quality craftsmanship.
